Project Proposal!
The Durango Early Learning Center is a preschool. It is a nonprofit center that works in partnership with the department of Human Services and the Colorado preschool and Kindergarten program. According to their website the focus of DELC is to develop a strong sense of worth in every child that comes through the doors by promoting the students as capable learners with valuable opinions and ideas. The organization is roles in the community are, discipline inclusiveness, and parent involvement. The Durango Early Learning Center discipline is, they don't have “time out” but rather have“quiet or thinking time.” They prefer to use guidance and support other then punishment. The teachers are involved in the curriculum and the planning, the scheduling and the maintenance of the school grounds. Parent involvement, one of the policies of
the school is that each family gives a minimum 12 hours per year in a voluntary capacity. My role in the internship is to help with the kids, play with them, help plan activities, and help with scheduling.
My mentor's name is Becca Trefry and she is a lead preschool teacher at the Durango Early Learning Center. She also is a camp director working with and caring for early childhood students. My mentors role in the organization is to plan and carry out a developmentally app ropriate lesson and documentation board illusions preschool learning. My mentor can offer and help me with learning about kids, specifically how they think and learn. My internship will also educate me about how to teach and take care of younger children. I can offer my mentor my all. I will help her with whatever she needs and show her that I want to learn about the children and about teaching. I will do whatever she asks of me to do. I decided to intern at the Durango Early Learning Center and intern with Becca because I love kids, and I would love to teach kids one day. I decided to intern with Becca because her classroom has kids ages 3-4 and time. My academic goals are some day go to a community college and learn more on how to work with children. My career goals are one day to open my own day care and teach and care for children. This experience with help me achieve my academic and career goals because im doing exactly what I love to do.
My project for my LINK internship is I would like to read to the kids and make a lesson on what I read to them to help them understand the
story better. My project is relevant to me because I struggled with reading for the longest time and if someone would have done this project
for me in the past, I feel like I would have been a better reader then I am today. I feel like this project is relevant to my the Durango Early
Learning site because, they're like Animas, it's a project based learning preschool. Also for children, they don't want to sit there for a long time. They want to do a fun project with their lesson The research that I have done for this project was to read a packet on how students learn and
how we need to approach them so they can learn. The skills and knowledge that you needed to know to start this project would be, how
to deal with kids, you have to like kids, and you need patience. The steps that I will take to complete this project will be, the firstweek I will be
observing Becca, to see how to teach and help the kids. The second week I will be helping Becca watch the kids and do activities with them.
The last week I will be, writing my lesson plan and working on my final project with the kids.
I went through several challenges during my internship process, I went to more then one interview because the first interview I went to I did not like what they did there. First, I went to Riverview Elementary School to see what it would be like to work with the special ed students. I felt very uncomfortable in the room with the kids. So I went to the Durango Early Learning Center and that fit me way better because its smaller and its more what I would like to do in the future.
