Mentor Interview
How did you attain your current position? I applied 10 years
go when I moved to Durango, there was an add in the paper. I interviewed with
the head of school. And they hired me. Worked in toddler room took over in
toddler room started out as toddler assistant and worked my way up.
What are your
responsibilities?
As the lead pre
school teacher I'm in charge of writing in the books and on the board about
what we did for the day. Designing the curriculum. Parent teacher conferences.
Summer camp director, I do all of the scheduling, talking to parents making sure
everything goes well. I do portfolios for all the kids for parent teacher
conferences.
What do you love your
current job?
I love that its not a
9 to 5 desk job. I love that every day is different. I love hanging out with the
kids and seeing how they change and grow over the years.
Would you change
anything?
More money, we don't
get paid very much. It's hard to find subs. It can be kind of stressful. Hard to
take a day off.
What is your greatest
strength with working with the kids?
I understand them
and I can relate to them.
Describe a typical
work week.
My days starts off, I
have to be here at 7:30. Mornings, are all the same. Afternoons depends on
weather i'm in rest or nap. Similar in terms of schedule but how the kids are
there moods changes every single day.
What are the most
difficult decisions you've made while working at DELC?
One time I had to
call social services because if you ever feel like there's abuse around the
school you have to call them, and it was very difficult because I didn't wanna
make anyone think that I was giving false information. It scared me.
What advice would you
give someone interested in working with children?
I would say, you know
just try and get experience with baby sitting or camps, and take college classes
in early child hood because its required to have college experience to work in
early child hood.
What is your favorite
part of your job?
I love hanging out
with the kids, and just seeing how much they learn in a year. This place is
basically my second family. It's cool to have my son grow up around here where
all of his teachers are like his aunts.
